To my dear 4Ns,

Pls do the following 5-5-5 practice and get them to me by first week of school next year.

I know you are likely to be working, earning extra pocket money and partying. But spare some time and do a little practice okie! :)

You just need 1 day to finish Task 1- go around and collect things!

You just need another day to do Task 2 - take all the photographs of the things that you like all in one day!

You can actually finish all 5 drawings in ONE day too!

So it takes only 3 days. :) Out of a 70-days holiday that you are having!

Or you can spread it out a little a day! :) To hone your skills.

If you are up to it, take the 10-10-10 challenge! :D

TASK 3: Start drawing what you like from what you see or photographs that you take or pictures that you find.
Make 5 observation drawings in DETAIL (2 pencil, 1 colour pencil, 1 paint, 1 Pen&Ink).

5-5-5 is the MINIMUM.

As mentioned I will be out for a N Level briefing.

1. Collect your Secondary One work from the teachers' table and later sketchbooks from Ms Keriann's pigeon hole.

2. Collect a handout for this Term's fashion module brief from the teachers' table.

3. Submit your SoVA Tasks to Christine and she will submit to Ms Junie Ong in Studio 1 Level 2 or at the staffroom at the end of the lesson.

4. Kim to take attendance and note the absentees and reasons on the white board in Studio 3. Proceed to Mac Lab 3 once everyone is here.

5. Activities for Today

Part One
In your teams, discuss what you want for your fashion collection in terms of:
a. Similar features/motifs/style/colours/silhoulettes
b. Different features/motifs/style/colours/silhoulette
c. Do sketches of what you think the collection should look like.

Write and sketch these in your sketchbooks for your reference. I will check later on.

Part Two
a. Individually, research on the Internet and come up with a draft for Design One and Two.
b. Submit the drafts ( two from each student, staple together) to Sarah Koh and she will submit to Ms Junie Ong at the end of the lesson.

Assignment for Today
a. Complete Preparatory Board 1, due next Wednesday 11/8 on A3 drawing paper/construction paper if you wish

For next week
a. Bring colour pencils, brushes, palette, rag, newspapers, water colour paints (if you have, else you share with your classmates what I have), sketchbook.

b. I will be out for an English workshop, Mr Brian Ho will be taking over the class. Check schedule for what will be covered.

You would be wondering where is that big fruit bowl?

Well, the good news is that you don't have to do that big fruit bowl. :)

So that you have time to work on your History High Performance Task.

Remember I said that we are having integrated lessons making connections with History, Art and Literature? So, let us focus on shophouses and immigrants. We can come back to the basics and fruit bowl later. :)

So for practice this week (Week 5),

You just have to colour in your Picture 1 (the shophouse in Arab street) with colour pencil

APPLY THE SKILLS you have learnt in the last lesson. While you are colouring, think about what you are going to draw for your HPT! :)

PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD. Anyone who sees this blog post please announce to the class on Monday and ask them to check this blog. :)

Next Thursday (11 February)

1. Please bring Colour Pencils and your sketchbook with Picture 1 COLOURED in AND a picture of your choice (from Picture 2-15) DRAWN in pencil (for those who have not completed this task -- work smart - you can draw a picture that is related to your HPT immigrant group, if you have other GOOD pictures for other immigrants you can use those too).

2. Please also bring your own research pictures -internet pictures printed out from National Archives, library books or newspaper cuttings of your IMMIGRANT group for History High Performance Task.

3. You do not have to bring paint materials.

Every color has a certain bias towards what's called warm and cool.

How Much of Each Primary Colour Do I Use?

The proportions in which you mix the two primaries is important. If you add more of one than the other, the secondary color will reflect this. For example, if you add more red than yellow, you end up with a strong, reddish orange; if you add more yellow than red, you produce a yellowish orange. Experiment with all the colors you have - and keep a record of what you've done.

Why should I learn how to mix colours?

Color mixing gives you a range of colors with a minimum number of tubes of paint If you're using a lot of a certain color, you'll probably decide it's easier to buy it in a tube rather than mix it up again and again.

But you'll find that there'll always be an instance when the color you want simply doesn't come ready-made, such as a particular green in a landscape. Your knowledge of color mixing will enable you to adapt a ready-made green to the shade you require.

Browns and Grays are tertiary colours.

Browns and grays contain all three primary colors. They're created by mixing either all three primary colors or a primary and secondary color (secondary colors of course being made from two primaries). By varying the proportions of the colors you're mixing, you create the different tertiary colors.

What's the Easiest Way to Mix a Brown?

Mix a primary color with its complementary color. So add orange to blue, purple to yellow, or green to red. Each of these makes a different brown, so once again make up a color chart to give you a quick reference to refer to.

What's the Easiest Way to Mix a Gray?

Mix some orange (or yellow and red) with a blue then add some white. You'll always want more blue than orange, but experiment with the amount of white you use. You can also mix blue with an earth color, such as raw umber or burnt sienna. Of course with watercolor you don't have white paint; to lighten a gray you add more water instead of white, but remember the gray will be lighter when it dries.

Why Do My Tertiary Colors Keep Turning Out Muddy?

If you mix too many colors together, you'll get mud. If your gray or brown isn't coming out the way you want it to, rather start again than add more color in the hope it'll work.

Should you add white to lighten a colour and black to darken it?

While it may seem logical that to lighten a color you add white to it and that to darken it you add black, this is an oversimplification. White reduces brightness so although it makes a color lighter, it removes its vibrancy. Black doesn't so much add darkness as create murkiness (though there are instances in which black is uniquely useful, such as the range of greens it can produce when mixed with yellow!).

Why Can't I Add White to Lighten a Colour?

Adding white to a color produces a tint of that color, makes a transparent color (such as ultramarine) opaque, and cools the color. This is most noticeable with red, which changes from a warm red into a cool pink when you use titanium white. You can add white to lighten a color, but because this removes the vibrancy of a color you'll end up with a washed-out picture if you use white to lighten all you colors. Rather develop your color mixing skills to produce hues of varying intensity. For example, to lighten a red, add some yellow instead than white (or try zinc white). Watercolor paints are, of course, transparent, so to lighten you simply add more water to paint to let the white of the paper shine through.

Why Can't I Add Black to Darken a Color?

Black tends to dirty colors rather than simply darken them. Of the most common blacks, Mars black is the blackest and is very opaque, ivory black has a brown undertone, and lamp black a blue undertone.

Avoiding Black for Shadows

The details of Monet's cathedral painting show the colors he avoided using simple black for shadows.

Think about how much is truly black in nature. Shadows are not simply black nor a darker version of the color of the object. They contain the complementary color of the object.

Take, for example, the shadow on a yellow object. If you mix black and yellow, you get an unattractive olive green. Instead of using this for the shadow, use a deep purple. Purple being the complementary color of yellow, both will look more vibrant. If you can't figure out what colors are in the shadows, simplify what you're looking at by placing your hand or a piece of white paper next to the bit you're having trouble with, then look again.

Haven't Painters Always Used Black?

At various times in their careers, the Impressionists didn't use black at all (find out what they used instead). Take Monet's paintings of Rouen Cathedral in the morning full sunlight, in dull weather, and in blue and gold to see what a genius can do with shadows (he did 20 paintings of the cathedral at different times of the day). It's not true to say the Impressionists never ever used black, but they certainly popularized the idea.

How to Test if a Paint Color is Opaque or Transparent

Different pigments have different covering properties. Some are extremely transparent, barely showing on top of another color. Others are extremely opaque, hiding what's beneath. Considering this, and not just what the color is, can enhance a subject. For example, using a transparent blue in a sky gives a greater feeling of airiness than an opaque blue will. Compiling a chart of the colors you regularly use, such as the one above, shows at a glance how transparent or opaque a color is.

How to Make a Chart:

Sort out your colors in an order that makes sense to you, such as the color spectrum (rainbow).
Mix up a little of each color. Paint a vertical stripe of each. Wait for them to dry.
Paint horizontal stripes for all the colors, in the same order.
If you're using a ruler, wipe the edge after each stripe so you don't contaminate the next one.
Record the names of the colors next to each stripe.

Check the Results:

Opaque pigments are dense and tend to block out other colors. This makes them ideal for subjects that are solid and heavy, such as tree trunks.
Transparent pigments are light and airy, barely showing on top of other colors. This makes them ideal for atmospheric subjects such as a misty morning or diaphanous fabrics.
Semi-transparent are somewhere between the two.
With time, you won't have to refer to the chart, but will instinctively know the properties of a particular color. Until then, stick the chart up on the wall where you can see it while you're painting.

Why must we learn about Colour Theory and Colour Terms?

A knowledge of Color Theory increases our appreciation of the different ways that artists use colour.

A knowledge of Color Terms helps us to understand and express how colours are used.

What is Colour?

Colour can be light, symbol and emotion.

Sir Isaac Newton was one of the first scientists to investigate color theory. Around 1671-72 he discovered the origin of color when he shone a beam of light through an angular prism and split it into the spectrum - the various colors of the rainbow. This simple experiment demonstrates that color comes from light - in fact, that color is light. Sir Isaac Newton developed the first circular diagram of colors in 1666.

Scientists investigate the properties of color theory whereas artists explore its visual effects. Color in art can be used in many different ways. Some artists are fascinated by the effects of light; some are interested in the symbolic meaning of color; and some use color to express their emotions.

Colour as Light : Claude Monet and Impressionist Painting

In France at the end of the 19th century, a new style of painting called 'Impressionism' emerged. The Impressionist artists were interested in trying to capture the changing effects of light on the landscape by using a more exact analysis of tone and color. Their ideas were inspired by Eugene Chevreul's scientific research into color theory.

The Impressionist artists abandoned the old idea that the shadow of an object was made up from the color of the object with some brown or black added. Instead, they enlivened their canvases with the new idea that the shadow of any color could be mixed from pure hues and broken up with its opposite color. For example, the shadow on a yellow surface could have some strokes of lilac painted into it to increase its vitality.

As the Impressionists had to work quickly to capture the fleeting effects of light, they had to sacrifice some of the traditional qualities of outline and detail.

Claude Monet, the greatest exponent of the Impressionist style, created several series of paintings exploring the effects of light. The illustration n the left is from a series of around twenty paintings of Rouen Cathedral (1892-94) which show the building at different times of day, at different times of year and under different weather conditions.

Colour as symbols : Symbolic association across cultures and in Nature

An understanding of color theory has been around since ancient times. Colors have been recognised for their symbolic power across many cultures and in nature herself.

Red through its association with fire and blood is used to represent danger, anger and violence. For the same reason it is also associated with affairs of the heart: love and passion.

Orange symbolises creativity and endurance. As a secondary color it combines elements of the colors used to mix it. It unites the creative passion of red with the clarity and wisdom of yellow.

Yellow is the color of the sun - the life support for our planet. As such it has come to represent life, energy, happiness, hope and wisdom.

Green, as the color of plants and grass, is the color of nature and all that is associated with health and growth. However, it is also used to represent more negative traits such as envy and inexperience.

Blue is the coolest and most calming of all the colors. As the color of the sky, it has been used since ancient times to represent heaven. In classical mythology, blue was the color associated with the gods, Venus and Jupiter. In Christianity, it becomes the symbol of the Virgin Mary as Queen of Heaven. As the color of the ocean, it is also suggests qualities like freshness, purity and hygiene.

Purple is the color of royalty, wealth and power. In times past, purple dyes were rare and expensive. Only the rich and powerful could afford to wear clothes of this luxurious color.

Brown is the color of earth, wood and stone. As such, it evokes craftsmanship and the great outdoors. It is also used to represent humility: a down to earth virtue.

Black and its association with darkness is used to represent death, evil, witchcraft, fear and sorrow.

Grey is the natural color of some metals and stone, but it also has negative associations with the weather, boredom and old age.

White and its association with light is used to represent peace, purity and goodness.

Color as Emotion

A knowledge of color theory helps us to express our feelings in an artwork. The language of color has even entered our vocabulary to help us describe our emotions. You can be ‘red’ with rage or ‘green’ with envy. We often speak of bright cheerful colors as well as sad or dull ones. A ‘grey’ day may be depressing and result in a feeling of the ‘blues’.

Hope and Joy

The paintings of Vincent Van Gogh show an instinctive understanding of color theory. In his 'Sunflowers' still life, he uses warm yellows to create an energetic image that radiates feelings of hope and joy.

On the other hand a more conscious use of color theory is found in the paintings of Pablo Picasso's 'blue period'. He chooses cool colors to evoke the chill of sadness and despair in 'The Tragedy', a typical subject from his work at this time.

Noise and Activity

The Pool of London (1906) by André Derain

André Derain uses the clash between warm and cool colors to express the noise and activity of this busy dockyard. He creates the illusion of depth in the painting by using warmer colors in the foreground which gradually become cooler towards the background. This organised arrangement of colors in a landscape is called Aerial Perspective.

Derain was one of a group of artists who were nicknamed 'Les Fauves' (the wild beasts). This title was coined by a critic who was outraged by the bold colors in their art. The artistic establishment of the day were offended as they respected control and restraint in the use of color. However, the 'Fauves' believed that color had a direct link to your emotions and they loved to use it at the highest pitch possible. The function of color in their painting was not to describe their subject matter, but to express the artist's feelings about it. Their ideas liberated the use of color for future generations of artists and ultimately gave them the freedom to explore color as a subject in its own right.

A Radiant Energy

Rainbox (2005) by John MacTaggart

This work celebrates the radiant energy of color as the subject matter of the picture. The artist uses a mixture of transparent colors ranging across the spectrum to create an abstract image of refracted color.

Color Terms 1

A knowledge of color terms helps us to appreciate the different ways that color may be used in art and design.

ADDITIVE and SUBTRACTIVE COLOR

There are two basic color models: Additive Color and Subtractive Color.

Additive Color involves the mixing of colored light. The colors on a television screen are a good example of this. Additive primary colors are red, green and blue.

Subtractive Color involves the mixing of colored paints, pigments, inks and dyes. The traditional subtractive primary colors are red, yellow and blue.In this lesson we are examining the terms used to describe Subtractive Color.

THE SPECTRUM

The spectrum is the colors of the rainbow arranged in their natural order: Red - Orange - Yellow - Green - Blue - Indigo - Violet. The mnemonic for this is ROY G BIV.

HUES

The Color Wheel

A hue is one of the colors of the spectrum. Hues have a circular order as illustrated in the color wheel above. The color wheel is a useful device to help us explain the relationships between Primary, Secondary and Tertiary colors.

PRIMARY COLORS

Red, Yellow and Blue are the primary colors. These are the three basic colors that are used to mix all hues.

SECONDARY COLORS

Orange, Green and Purple are the secondary colors. They are achieved by mixing two primary colors together.

TERTIARY COLORS

Tertiary colors are more subtle hues which are achieved by mixing a primary and a secondary color that are adjacent on the color wheel.

OPPOSITE and COMPLEMENTARY COLORS

Opposite colors are diagonally opposite one another on the color wheel. Opposite colors create the maximum contrast with one another. You can work out the opposite color to any primary color by taking the other two primaries and mixing them together. The result will be its opposite or ‘complementary’ color. (Chagall says colours are lovers of their opposites -like man and woman -maximum contrast, attract a lot of attention)

ANALOGOUS COLORS

Analogous colors sit next to one another on the color wheel. These colors are in harmony with one another (as Chagall says, colours are friends with their neighbours so you get harmony)

A knowledge of color terms helps us to appreciate the different ways that color may be used in art and design.

COLOR TINTS

A tint describes a color that is mixed with white.

COLOR SHADES

A shade describes a color that is mixed with black.

COLOR INTENSITY

Color intensity is the strength or value of a color. In our illustration, the three violet rectangles are identical colors but they appear to change when surrounded by different colors. Therefore, the intensity of a color changes in relation to the color that surrounds it. This effect is known as Simultaneous Contrast.

TRANSPARENT COLORS

Transparent colors are colors that you can see through. Paint is usually mixed very thinly to make it transparent. Watercolor is the most transparent paint, but oil and acrylics can also be thinned for a similar effect. Transparent paint is applied in what we call a ‘color wash’ in watercolor painting or a ‘color glaze’ in oil or acrylic painting. When you overlay two transparent colors they will mix to create a third. Different types of paint and certain colors are naturally more transparent than others.

OPAQUE COLORS

Opaque colors are colors that you cannot see through. Paint is usually mixed very thickly to make it opaque. Oil and acrylic paint are the most opaque paints, but gouache is a type of watercolor also designed for this purpose. Different types of paint and certain colors are naturally more opaque than others. Titanium white is often added to very transparent colors to make them opaque.

WARM and COOL COLORS

Warm colors are said to be visually and emotionally exciting, while cool colors have a more calming effect. The red / yellow side of the color wheel is said to be warm, similar to the colors of fire. These colors appear to advance towards you and stand out more than other colors when viewed from a distance. The green / blue side of the color wheel is said to be cool, similar to the colors of ice. These colors appear to recede and fade into the distance. A knowledge of how warm and cool colors work is useful when arranging colors in a landscape to create the illusion of distance. This illusion is called Aerial Perspective.

TONE

Tone is the lightness or darkness of a color. It is used to suggest the effect of light and shade and to create the illusion of 3D form.

MATT and GLOSS COLOR

These terms refer to the reflective qualities of color. The matt color of the cube and the cone creates a dull non-reflective surface, while the gloss color of the sphere and cylinder gives a brighter reflective finish.

Artists mix mediums ( turpentine, linseed oil, acrylic emulsions) with paint to alter the matt or gloss effect of paint. A balance of matt and gloss effects on the surface of a painting could be a desired effect, but usually artists like to even out the sheen of the surface by applying an overall matt or gloss varnish. Not only does this unify the color and surface but it also protects the painting from dust and dirt.

MONOCHROME and POLYCHROME COLOR

The term monochrome refers to the use of one color or various shades of one color in a single form. Polychrome refers to the use of many colors in one form.

Algorithm

An algorithm (pronounced AL-go-rith-um) is a procedure or formula for solving a problem. The word derives from the name of the mathematician, Mohammed ibn-Musa al-Khwarizmi, who was part of the royal court in Baghdad and who lived from about 780 to 850. Al-Khwarizmi's work is the likely source for the word algebra as well.

I am back from Myanmar and today is the start of 2010. Have resolved to update this blog more regularly to archive the bits and pieces of my teaching life. 当教师的酸甜苦辣。当顶尖教育者磨练的过程。How I trained to be a super-lady. :)

I had a good discussion with Mike about our plans for 2010, have decided to postpone the big W project to Dec 2011. So will be looking for a project to do in Dec 2010. We also had a good debate/discussion on cultural documentation YEP projects and library projects in Myanmar. It was interesting to talk to him about research. There are really so many factors to consider. Is supporting research still considered research, are they both research but different levels of research?

Give us some time, we will make it good. This will be a year of growth and advancement for both of us. It will be spring after winter. Towards 2011! :)

a number of indian dhoby men operated a laundry business in the neighbourhood that i lived when i was a young boy. then i was living at upper dickson road in the serangoon area. the white sheets, towels and clothings would be hanging on clothes lines strung between poles in the open field by the side of weld road.

when i shifted to towner road in the 70s, i came across a similar sight - a lot of washings being hung out in the open to dry. this was at st george's road, another housing development board estate, separated from towner estate by a canal. the laundry shop is also operated by indians.

the shop is still there, at the corner of block 3, st george's road. they make use of the grass patch next to the road to dry their washings. these days, the laundry at st george's road uses the washing machine and the electric iron. in the 50s and 60s, the dhobies washed everything by hand and for ironing, they used the charcoal-iron.
the day when i went to st george's road to take some pictures, the washings - a lot of them, dhotis - were spread out on two grass patches near the laundry shop. they still have clothes lines strung between poles to hang the laundered clothing and towels.

"in the old days, long before the electric iron and washing machine were in common use, dhoby shops were very much relied upon for their services, particularly by those in the upper and middle income brackets.

for S$5 per person, per family, per month, the laundry man would collect soiled linen and return them fully laundered. these days, you are charged by the item. in those days, the laundry man usually worked a nine-hour day with sunday being a rest day."

"the laundry was done in traditional style, with the clothes soaked in detergent and boiled in huge cauldrons. towels and other sheets were also beaten on stone slabs. the clothes were dried on open land, leased by the laundry shop."

Kailing makes my day with her comment that she noticed the fashion pictures outside my desk missing. And she wants a set for her desk! :) It's nice to know I made another difference.

Hillary commented yesterday just before leaving the library, "Miss Teo, we are lucky to have you as our teacher." :) The background was that we had reading period in the library and another teacher came in with her class. The class was rather naughty and she asked a few to sit in the middle of the library. That pretty much turned my 1/3s into little angels (not that they weren't already, but there are the occasional naughty talkative ones too -you know who you are) and appreciate they have me as their English teacher.

Yesterday I felt that I have risen in ranks -been promoted by the students. I got a sorry card from the class, well most of the class wrote in it. Many sorries about stressing me and submitting work late and encouraging me not to be stressed and that I have taught them a lot and I am a good teacher they appreciate having me. :)

Well, indeed it's been a stressful period, we have both done much more than we expected or were used to. But think about it, it's great work! I will work to get the works displayed :) You have all done well. It's struggles that make us grow!

17th Conference of Commonwealth Education Ministers 2009

Had the good fortune to be selected to represent Singapore at the 17th Conference of Commonwealth Education Ministers (CCEM) in Kuala Lumpur KLCC as a youth forum delegate from 14 June - 20 June 2009. There were other concurrent sessions for the ministers, stakeholders, University Vice-chancellors and teachers.

It was eye-opening and I got to meet people from the Commonwealth countries especially from various countries in Africa and Caribbean. I came back with a better understanding of the Commonwealth, of KL and of myself.

I asked many questions and I might have made people feel uncomfortable, I am sorry about that. I was not very secure either as it did not start off that well. I learnt that I should not go for conference in the middle -they had a homestay programme before I joined. I felt rather like a sore thumb when I first arrived. I participated in most of the forums either asking questions or helping to add on to things and I made a last comment at the last joint forum about being open minded and collaboration with an open heart. I quoted Ikeda sensei's words on Human Revolution, how one person can make a change that can impact the rest of humanity. One of the TV stations came to interview me and asked me to repeat my comment. A lot of other people were interviewed during the duration of the conference.

It was my first overseas conference, the first time I met people from Africa and Caribbean, first solitary experience in KL and also the first time I had such a close encounter with an official in such context. I am appalled at how much resources are consumed in the name of a big conference. It is also not easy to host such a conference. I learnt about the situation in other countries and also about Singapore's attitude towards the Commonwealth and how others view Singapore in the Commonwealth.

Overall it was a good experience. :)

M & T: Good morning Mrs Lee, Mrs Matthews, teachers and friends!

M: I am Megan, from 2/1.

T: and I am Tiffany from 2/2.

M & T: We are your MCs for today! Welcome to the opening ceremony of our “CHIJ City of the Future” Exhibition.

M: This exhibition has been put up by our Secondary 2 AEP and Secondary 3/9 and 3/10 GAP students over a period of four weeks.

T: Yes, we worked on the project separately for the first three weeks and only came together last week to put it together. It was very tough but I enjoyed the experience!

M: Yes, the Sec 2 AEP students played the role of “young architects” who had to design and construct architectural models from cardboard with inspiration from various architects such as I.M Pei.

T: The Sec 3/9 and 3/10 GAP students stepped into the shoes of young designers and sculptors, and were tasked to design and construct cardboard transport models and sculptures for their City of the Future, referencing ideas from Cubism and various cardboard artists.

M: This exhibition would not have been possible without the careful delegation of work and dedication by the members of the various committees that we set up. You can see the full structure of the City Management Board in the exhibition later. (Points to the board)

T: We learnt to apply the Habits of Mind – Creating, Imagining and Innovating as well as the one that most of us took a while to apply –Persisting.

M: Yes, at first most of us thought that this big dream was impossible, there was so much to do in such a short time, but through persistence, we managed to make this dream possible!

T: We also had to think interdependently! Teamwork was crucial and some of us had to learn it the hard way but we managed to work together in the end.

M: Yes, I feel very happy that we have managed to achieve this dream as a team. I learnt a lot from this project and had a lot of fun with the teammates.

T: Yes! Ok, let us go on with the Opening Ceremony. Let us now invite our Guest of Honour, the President of the CHIJ City of the Future, Mrs Regina Lee to say a few words. Mrs Lee please!

T: As a token of appreciation our Guest of Honour, we would like to present Mrs Lee with an artwork by our City of the Future Project Director Miss Teo –the Cubist Guitar, which was inspired by Picasso’s Guitars and Chris Gilmore. This is the guitar that Miss Teo used to inspire many of our Secondary 3 students for their own sculpture projects.

M: Thank you Mrs Lee. Now we would like to invite Mrs Lee, Mrs Matthews, Mr Richard Armstrong, Ms Low Sok Hui and Ms Teo Siew Kuang to take a group photo with the Sec 2 AEP and Sec 3 students. and it all went well, according to script, though it was a little messy here and there, it was everyone's first time having an opening ceremony at the lobby I suppose and there were just so many people milling around, so many people talking and walking around. Megan and Tiffany did really well, good job!

I feel so relieved after the whole opening, but there is one small regret and big learning point. I should have gone to 3/9 and 3/10 classrooms this morning to announce the change in opening timing to make sure that they got the message and they would all come down for the opening... because they did not come. I switched the opening so that they could make it but in the end because I did not make sure that the message got passed to them, they did not know. However, we managed to take group photos together at the end before their recess ended. :)

It rained this morning and flag raising was cancelled. Megan and Tiffany reacted well to the sudden change and rose to the occasion in doing the publicity over the PA system. Ms Low and me helped them to rewrite the blurb on the spot. It was stressful!

They also asked me to given an introduction before the girls went on but I really did not know what to say. It was a little scary.

Some girls feedbacked that they could not really hear Megan as her voice was too soft but I am still happy! Well done girls! :)

Reflections from the Sec 2 AEP Students

Sometimes I wonder if I made the right decision to initiate this big dream, but along the way it has really brought me much closer to all my girls and this exhibition is already a success in our hearts. We have come far together and worked together as a team to achieve this.

Here are the reflections from the Sec 2 AEP and Sec3 girls that really warm my heart and make me feel that it is all worth it. :)

"As an art student, this project was a miniature process or journey as my initial idea metamorphed into something much more splendid.

As a student sitting for the exams, it is the most time consuming art installation or graded piece I have ever had to endure. Thumbs-up to our new art teacher for Miss Teo for that.

I think that art projects are learning processes, like a great big building in construction. Each piece of work tells you a little bit more about yourself beyond the superficial level of "I like this sketch/sculpture". It tells you your strengths and weaknesses. Do I like this effect? Do I spend effort on this? Am I resourceful? Am I creative?

A bit of your personality shows through in the end product and getting two levels of AEP girls gives a more complete picture of the AEP clan of girls who carry big boards and awkward shapes around.

My building left me with a spark of an idea to make some more designs of buildings and create them with an even more diverse range of materials. It's more than satisfaction this City of the Future leaves you with.

It's a little string you want to follow into the labyrinth."

"Doing this project made me learn to broaden my mindset because to do a building for the City of the Future required a lot of imagination. I built a hospital which was really a big, elaborate project. As the head of the "National Parks" committee, I had to learn to manage my time, to balance my time between the lots of studying I have to do, and the welfare of the exhibition. Through this learning journey, I was also exposed to planning, compromising and working with different materials and different people. Through all the obstacles that we faced during the setting up of the exhibition, the long, tireless, countless hours spent on building this city, I have to say the satisfaction I feel, now that it is done, is worth it."

"Working through this wonderful project had certainly benefited me in many ways such that I can have a hands-on experience to build my dream building and it also gave me a chance to work hand-in-hand with my fellow AEP peers. It was indeed a fun-loving experience, and I felt that I have learnt a lot in the whole process of this project. Being a member in the City Development Committee was really tiring but interesting because we had to make a wise decision to place certain buildings at certain areas. We had many tasks to accomplish within a short period of time which made it really a challenging task.

I felt that this project needed much cooperation from everyone. Without one's cooperation, this project could not have been successful as the work was really tedious. With determination and all the hard work and time everyone put in, especially when the examinations are around the corner, I would say that this project was an overall success."

"I recall repeating and re-doing the whole sculpture thrice, just so as to improve it. Well, of course I would not have been able to achieve that without God's grace, so yeah :)

I learnt that communicating with clarity and precision plays an important role in this project as everyone has her own cool individual idea. Persistence and tolerance is essential!

What I did was an Athlete's village with a hotel resort, a track and a pool. My classmates called my building the toilet bowl seat.

I must say we did very well in this project. I love AEP! Thanks."

"This project has taught me many things. Being in the City Development committee showed me that cooperation and communication is always needed between you and your teammates. I believe that the City Development Committee found this out the hard way as at some point of this project, some committee members slacked off while some others worked. Sometimes it was hard for the head of our committee to get things done as no one really listened to her. With this attitude I really wondered if we would be able to make this exhibition possible. However, we finally got it into our heads and we started to put our many words into actions."

"City of the Future is one of the first exhibitions that we, the AEP-ians (Sec2s) have assembled together. It was, of course, not easy planning and coordinating the city plan. We also hold busy schedules and what with our examinations coming. This then affected the quality of our work. Persistence and determination is what kept us going. Without it, we would have given up this project sooner. What matters about this project, is not the outcome but the process and the experience that we have."

"Through this wonderful experience working hand in hand with my AEP classmates, I felt that I had learnt a lot. As a member of the City Development Committee, which I felt acted as the root of our project, we certainly had an important mission to accomplish. Any task that was not properly done in the City Development would affect the other committee's progress in this huge project. Eventually this project would fail and fall like a pack of dominoes. With determination, I decided to set a task for myself and to complete my given assignments -preparatory studies and a futuristic building structure. Together, if everybody were to complete their given assignments, this project would be a success. However, our project took a turn for the worse as many people did not manage to complete their tasks. As a result we were not able to keep on schedule. Persistance was required in this project for it to be successful. Co-operation is the key to success! :)"

"I felt that this project has definitely taught me new things. Being in the City Development Committee, I felt that our committee was the most important one as the other committees would not be able to function if we did not get anything done. Time was also tight, and we had alot to do. Although throughout the past few meetings, people did not show up, and did not bring their work, we still persisted and accomplished at least one task at the end of the day.

Sometimes, we faced difficulties and I really felt like we were all hopeless. However we still managed to complete the project.

I have learnt that cooperation and a big team effort is needed to be able to carry out an assignment like this. Without the cooperation of just one girl, and the whole project could just fall apart. I felt that everyone should not just complete and hand in their own individual sculptures and buildings but should also contribute to the group. Overall, I think that everyone did relatively well in this project. It was my first experience being an "architect" and I felt that it was quite fun.

If no one had put any effort into this project, nothing would have been done. I feel that it was a job well done and I hope to do a project like this again."

"Inspired by music, I made a piano as a concert hall as well as it being a mega mall catered for the musically inclined as well as other people, the "City of the Future" element is instilled into certain areas of my sculpture. After random brainstorming, I decided on the note. It's a skate-park for the future skateboarders or hoverboarders. Just a silent hint of futurism present.

Through the entire process, I have managed to have first hand experience on how to experiment with building a structure, exploring the types of exciting architecture, as well as being able to expand knowledge through certain aspects. Also being able to experiment with the procedure of sculptures, what was feasible, what wasn't was enjoyable. Being able to see from different perspectives contributed a lot with the close studies done of certain styles of architecture."

"I learnt that setting up an exhibition is really REALLY DIFFICULT, (so you might not want to try this at home). My group (N.Parks) had a hard time deciding on many things like position of rivers, hills, beach and shape of trees. With a lot of team work we were able to finish everything! WHOOT!"

"This project "City of the Future" taught me many life skills, values and lessons I can apply to everyday life, such as being on task, on time and self-disciplined to accomplish what I set my mind to do.

It has been a fast paced project with many things to finish before due dates, planning, prep work and final structures are only the beginnings of our To-Dos. The City's plans, landforms and amenities are also essential to create a city people would want to live in.

Working closely with friends and teachers as well as juggling time to revise for upcoming mid year exams was tough, but as the project draws to a close, everything from the late night rushing to waking up at 4.30am to finish and touching up in between lessons, all these are worth it for what I have gained in return.

"When my peers and I were first assigned this task of designing and constructing buildings for 'City of the Future', we all thought the same thing, "CRAP! It's another project!" Yes, countless projects is the curse of AEP girls. You wouldn't believe how many times I have gotten tangled up in double-sided tape. Making the exhibition happen: Arranging the buildings (Hey the buildings don't move by themselves), creating the layout of the prep work (it was not arranged randomly), making trees (trees do not grow on trees) and the list goes on (it's an incredibly LOOONG list). But don't get me wrong. I. LOVED. EVERY. MINUTE. So yeah, it was hard but I learnt so much. I suppose you have heard of that teaching which everyone repeats over and over again. The one that, although repeated constantly, has been lost in everyone's desire to win: It's the experience that matters. And so to me, this project has been an experience that I will never give up."

"I really enjoyed myself during this project. Even if some setbacks spoil my mood, it was really fun. Sometimes my sketches does not look like what I did but I persisted and managed to pull through. I hope that everyone will enjoy our exhibition as we enjoyed ourselves while we set up the project for you. I used texture for my indoor farm. Bubble wrap and crushed foil. I think that its purpose must look like the building. Thus it looks like an pineapple. XD"

"Well, this project made me learn how to work together and cooperate with one another. I learnt to be disciplined and go for after school project times (when we stay back to finish up the project). I find that things may look really easy, but it is not that easy to do. Because it takes a lot of preparation, planning, drafting, sketches to get the final piece of work. I realised that it takes a lot of team work to get this major project done. Without any committee, the project would fail. But I think the project is at the wrong time because it is very near our mid-year exams and it takes a lot of time so it is a little time consuming."
